2 Landscape Perception "Lagoa da Conceição" is a lagoon inside the island, whose dimensions are roughly 20 by 5 km. It is one of the most beautiful places on the island. Around it, there are roads/avenues, natural woods and trails. Along the avenues, you can find many restaurants and bars that serve typical foods. Lagoa is connected to the ocean by a canal located in a village called "Barra da Lagoa". A Lagoa da Conceição é uma lagoa no interior da ilha, cujas dimensões são cerca de 20 por 5 km. É um dos mais belos locais da ilha. Ao redor dela, há estradas/caminhos, bosques naturais e trilhas. Ao longo de avenidas, é possível encontrar diversos restaurantes e bares que servem comidas típicas. A lagoa está conectada ao oceano por um canal localizado em uma vila chamada "Barra da Lagoa"

7 Interviews Entrevistas We interviewed three persons who live in Lagoa to see their perception of the landscape. One of our interviewees is a woman who has been living there for almost 30 years. The other interviewee is a woman who came from Netherlands and she has been living in Lagoa for 7 months. The other one is a young man who has been living there for 2 years and a half. When asked them why they choose to live there, they said that the nature was one of the main reasons. The woman who lives there for more time said that the peace and quiet from Lagoa attracted her. We asked them what is the best part in living there. They were unanimous: the peace, the nature, the view, are some of the things that make Lagoa a great place to live. When asked about the worst part in living there, all of them said that the accessibility, the traffic, especially in Rendeiras avenue, are really difficult at some hours of the day and in the summer. The woman who has been living there for 28 years said that the neighborhood had suffered a lot of changes. The traffic has increased a lot, but Lagoa earned a great autonomy. She also said that the landscape had suffered changes, like illegal occupation in the coastline and in the slope, which can cause environmental problems, like erosion. Entrevistamos três pessoas que moram na Lagoa para ver qual é a percepção delas a respeito da paisagem. Uma de nossas entrevistadas é uma mulher que mora lá há quase 30 anos. A outra entrevistada é uma mulher que veio da Holanda e mora na Lagoa há 7 meses. E o outro é um jovem que mora lá há 2 anos e meio. Quando perguntamos por que eles escolheram a Lagoa para morar, eles nos disseram que a natureza foi uma das principais razões. A que mora lá há mais tempo disse que a tranquilidade da Lagoa a atraiu. Perguntamos qual a melhor parte em viver lá. Eles foram unânimes: a tranquilidade, a natureza, a vista, são alguns dos fatores que fazem da Lagoa um ótimo lugar para viver. Quando perguntamos sobre a pior parte, todos disseram que a acessibilidade, o trânsito, especialmente na Avenida das Rendeiras, são bem complicados em determinados horários do dia e na temporada. Nossa entrevistada que mora lá há 28 anos disse que o bairro sofreu muitas mudanças. O tráfego de veículos cresceu muito, mas a Lagoa conquistou uma boa autonomia. Disse também que a paisagem sofreu mudanças, tais como ocupação inadequada na orla e encosta, o que pode trazer problemas ambientais, como a erosão.

8 We asked them what are the main problems of accessibility that they have to face every day and they said the Rendeiras avenue, and what took 10 minutes now takes 30. They said that Lagoa has many options of leisure, especially the aquatic sports, like windsurf. They all said that their first impression of Lagoa was a peaceful place, a piece of land lost in the sea. They also said that they never had trouble with the visitors. They all agree that the neighborhood has an excellent autonomy, and provide first need services. They told us that the biggest interference that could be done in Lagoa is work on the rotes and the maintenance of the environmental quality. Also, the young man said that a great intervention would be the sewage treatment, because where he lives (Canto dos Araçás) there isnt such thing. Perguntamos quais os principais problemas de acessibilidade que eles têm que enfrentar todos os dias e nos disseram que a Avenida das Rendeiras, e um trecho que fazia-se em 10 minutos agora leva meia hora. Eles nos disseram que a Lagoa tem muitas opções de lazer, principalmente os esportes aquáticos, como o windsurf. Todos disseram que a primeira impressão que tiveram da Lagoa foi de um lugar pacífico, um pedacinho de terra perdido no mar. Nos disseram também que nunca tiveram problema algum com os visitantes. Todos concordam que o bairro tem hoje uma excelente autonomia, e fornece serviços de primeira necessidade. Elas nos falaram que a maior interferência que pode ser feita na Lagoa é melhorar as rodovias e também fazer uma manutenção da qualidade ambiental. Já o jovem disse que a maior interferência seria o tratamento de esgoto, pois onde ele mora (Canto dos Araçás) não há.

10 Os principais motivos que levaram as pessoas à Lagoa da Conceição pela primeira vez foram sua fama de lugar tranqüilo para passeios familiares e suas atividades noturnas, como bares e restaurantes. As primeiras percepções dos visitantes quanto à paisagem foram diversas: a beleza do lugar, a calma e o ar puro; a sensação de cidade pequena e isolada do centro de Florianópolis, com comunidade tradicional e boa gastronomia chamaram a atenção. Mas a sensação de lugar sujo, desorganizado e caótico (devido ao fluxo de trânsito incompatível com as vias) – não coincidia com as expectativas que os visitantes tinham da localidade. Além disso, há uma impressão de que o bairro gira em função dos seus visitantes e de que arquitetura deixa a desejar, pois esta poderia valorizar a paisagem natural. Para a maioria, a Lagoa é isolada do centro por dois principais motivos: a barreira física e visual (os morros) que trazem essa sensação; e o problema da mobilidade – devido ao intenso tráfego pelo acesso principal e incompatibilidade de uso do segundo acesso. Visitors Visitantes (6 pessoas) The main reasons that led people to the Lagoa da Conceição of the first time were its reputation as a peaceful place for family outings and evening activities, such as bars and restaurants. The first perceptions of the visitors about the landscape were several: the beauty of the place, the quiet and the clean air, the feeling of small town and isolated from downtown, the traditional community and the good food got their attention. But the feeling of a dirty place, disorganized and chaotic (because of the incompatible flow of the traffic with the roads) - did not match with the expectations that the visitors had of the place. Besides, there is an impression that the neighborhood revolves around the visitors and that the architecture is weak, because it could enrich the natural landscape. For most of them, Lagoa is isolated from downtown for two main reasons: the visual and physical barrier (the hills) that brings this feeling, and the mobility problem - intense traffic on the main access and incompatibility of the use on the second access.
