He graduated from School of Belas Artes in Oporto. In 1988, he won the awards from Alvar Aalto and Mies van der Rohe foundations. In 1992 he won the Pritzker Prize, the Nobel of architecture. In Portugal he won Secil Architecture Prize (1996); the International Medal of Arts (2002); and the Golden Lion, award of the Venice Biennale, in 2012.

BIOGRAPHY The brothers Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus founded their studio in 1988. Both brothers teach at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and at the Academia of Architettura di Mendrizio, in Switzerland. They won the Mies van der Rohe Prize, the Contemporary Architecture Prize in 2007 and the Ibero American Biennial of Architecture.

In 2005 he was honoured the Honoris Causa fromthe Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
