2 Alcochete pode e deve orgulhar-se de manter viva uma tradição, carregada de fé religiosa, há mais de 500 anos! São, pelo menos, cinco os séculos de intensa devoção e homenagem a Nossa Senhora da Atalaia. Alcochete can and must be proud to keep alive a tradition, loaded of religious faith, has more than 500 years! Uma devoção alicerçada numa festa que ano após ano se inicia na véspera de Domingo de Páscoa e se prolonga por mais três dias, obedecendo a um conjunto de rituais, que, sofrendo ou não algumas alterações, os marítimos (barqueiros) de Alcochete transportaram até aos dias de hoje. A história do Círio tem sido preservada através da tradição oral e tem ganho interpretações diversas ao longo dos tempos. Ainda há alguns anos, aliás, a devoção a Nossa Senhora da Atalaia passou duras provas, atingida em pleno pelo decréscimo da actividade marítima. Por essa altura, os festeiros contavam com algumas dezenas de participantes no Círio. 4 Actualmente, o número ultrapassa o milhar e a festa de maior tradição em Alcochete, mostra capacidade de adaptar-se a novas épocas e realidades diversas. 6 No dia seguinte, Domingo de Páscoa, à medida que a tarde avança, as pessoas vão perfilando nas ruas da Vila, ansiosas por um dos momentos mais altos das comemorações - «o cortejo de burros». 7 Todavia, é na segunda-feira, com a realização de Missa na Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia, seguida de Procissão e de um leilão de bandeiras e fogaças, que a festa assume, para as gentes locais, maior relevo. 8 Hoje, o leilão, que é efectuado no Adro da Igreja da Atalaia já reúne cerca de 140 bandeiras. Para cada uma delas a base de licitação ascende aos 500 euros, excepção feita ao guião, cujo valor mínimo se cifra perto de 2500 euros. 9 Após o leilão, ruma-se a Alcochete para se proceder a novo «cortejo de burros». After the auction, people turn to Alcochete to proceed a new Procession of donkeys. Na terça-feira, finalmente, tem lugar um desfile a pé, pelas ruas da Vila, em homenagem à comissão organizadora dos festejos. E, assim, Alcochete continua a fazer…história!
