Introdução O sistema de agricultura de derruba- e - queima é característico na paisagem agrícola da região nordeste do Pará, mas, a pressão demográfica que vem aumentando nesta região coloca em risco a estabilidade deste sistema de uso da terra. Para aumentar a disponibilidade de nutrientes, em especial, o nitrogênio para a fase de cultivos agrícolas, as capoeiras foram enriquecidas com espécies fixadoras de N numa área de pequeno agricultor no município de Igarapé – Açu. Os objetivos deste estudo são verificar: (1) se o enriquecimento da capoeira leva a um efeito residual na disponibilidade de N para os microorganismos do solo, (2) se a presença de leguminosas fixadoras de N afetam as emissões dos gases N 2 O, NO, CO 2 e CH 4. Metodologia O trabalho foi realizado em propriedade de agricultura familiar, no município de Igarapé - Acú, onde as espécies Acacia mangium Willd. e Inga edulis Mart., foram plantadas para o enriquecimento de capoeira como atividade do Projeto Shift- Capoeira. Foram selecionadas três parcelas de cada espécie e três parcelas como controle. Os fluxos de NO e CO 2 foram medidos utilizando-se os analisadores de gases (Fig. 1) para NO e IRGA (Li-Cor, LI , inc., Lincoln, NE, USA) para CO 2, e os fluxos de N 2 O e CH 4 através de amostras coletadas via seringas (Fig.2) e posteriormente analisadas em laboratório, em cromatografia gasosa. Foram medidos também o índice de disponibilidade de N no solo, bem como a taxa de nutrientes contidos no throughfall. A área foi enriquecida com as leguminosas, seguido de quase 3 anos de pousio e depois por um preparo de área sem queima, seguida de cultivo de Maize (Zea mays L.) e Cassava (Manioht esculenta Crantz) (Tabela1). Resultados O fluxo de CO 2 aumentou quando iniciou o período chuvoso (janeiro 00), a parti dai o fluxo nos tratamentos com A. mangium e I. edulis diminuiram em relação ao Controle (Fig.3a). O aumento do fluxo de CO 2 indica um aumento da respiração radicular bem como da atividade microbiana do solo. O fluxo de N 2 O e NO (Fig.3b e 3c) apresentaram um comportamento inverso no mês de fevereiro, período chuvoso. Os fluxos de CH 4 podem ser vistos na figura 3d, valores positivos indicam as emissões do solo para a atmosféra e valores negativos indicam o consumo de CH 4 de atmosféra pelo solo. Embora os dados mostram algumas diferenças nos fluxos dos gases, eles apresentaram uma diferença não significativa estatisticamente. The CO 2 flux increased at the beginning of the rainy season (January 2000), when the fluxes from the treatments were less than from the control. The increase in CO 2 flux indicates an increase in root and microbial activity during the rainy season. The flux of N 2 O and NO (Fig.3b and 3c) showed the opposite trends in the rainy season month of February. The fluxes of CH 4 are shown in Fig. 3d, where positive values indicate emissions from the soil to the atmosphere and negative values indicate consumption of atmospheric CH 4 by the soils. Although the data show some differences in fluxes, the differences are not statistically significant. Emissões de gases - traço em capoeira enriquecida no nordeste do Pará – Brasil 1 Conclusão Em termos gerais os dados mostram que a prática de enriquecimento de capoeira com espécies que fixam N não afetam as emissões dos gases N 2 O, NO, CO 2 e CH 4. Generally, the data show that the practice of enrichment of fallows with N fixing trees does not appear to affect gaseous emissions of N 2 O, NO, CO 2 e CH 4. We intend to continue to measure these gaseous emissions as the resprouting N fixing trees in this young fallow grow during the next two years. The system of cut and burn agriculture is common in northeastern Pará, but increasing demographic pressures are putting at risk the stability of this land use system. To increase nutrient availability, especially nitrogen, the fallow phase of these fields has been enriched with nitrogen fixing tree species in an area of small farmers in the municipality of Igarapé Açu. The objectives of this study are to verify: (1) if the fallow enrichment provides a residual effect on the availability of N for soil microorganisms, and (2) if the presence of N-fixing species affects the emissions of the gases N 2 O, NO, CO 2 e CH 4 from the soil. This work was conducted on a family farm in the municipality of Igarapé Açu, where the species Acacia mangium Willd. e Inga edulis Mart were planted by the SHIFT project to enrich the fallow fields. Three plots were selected for each species planted and 3 plots for controls. Fluxes of NO and CO 2 were made with Scintrex and LiCor analyzers, respectively. Syringe samples were collected for later analyses in the laboratory by gas chromatography for N 2 O e CH 4. We are also measuring indices of N availability in the soils and rates of nutrient leaching in throughfall. The area was enriched with legumes during about 3 years of fallow, then it was prepared without burning, and then planted in maize and cassava. This study began after the last cassava harvest.
