Mundinho to coronel Aristóteles: Disse-lhe, coronel, o que tinha a lhe dizer. Não vim lhe pedir votos, sei que o senhor é unha e carne com o coronel Ramiro Bastos. Tive grande prazer em vê-lo. I have told you all I had to say. I haven’t come to solicit votes. I know that you are hand in glove with Colonel Ramiro Bastos. It’s been a great pleasure to see you. Coronel Melk para Mundinho: Vosmicê me adesculpe: por que vosmicê não faz um arranjo com ele? Excuse me for suggesting this, but why don’t you make a deal with him? Negro Fagundes para Gabriela: Tu percura ele. Marca um lugar pra mim encontrar. You go talk with him. Ask him where I should meet him.

“Gabriela” represents undoubtedly the artistic liberation of Senhor Amado from a long period of ideological commitment to Communist orthodoxy. He has not had to make a public profession of his present views to show that his artistic integrity has prevailed over the intellectual “Party line”. He was shocked by the Hungarian bloodbath and publicly criticized the Soviet handling of the Pasternak case and, in these reactions, he is very close to Europeans intellectuals, such as Jean Paul Sartre, with whom he is personally friends with. (The New York Times, September 16 th,1962).

ASA BRANCA ( Luiz Gonzaga e Humberto Teixeira, 1947) Quando oiei a terra ardendo Qual a fogueira de São João Eu preguntei a Deus do céu,ai Por que tamanha judiação Que braseiro, que fornaia Nem um pé de prantação Por farta d'água perdi meu gado Morreu de sede meu alazão Inté mesmo a asa branca Bateu asas do sertão "Intonce" eu disse adeus Rosinha Guarda contigo meu coração Hoje longe muitas légua Numa triste solidão Espero a chuva cair de novo Pra mim vortar pro meu sertão Quando o verde dos teus óio Se espalhar na prantação Eu te asseguro não chore não, viu Que eu vortarei, viu Meu coração ASA BRANCA (Forró in the Dark with David Byrne, 2007) When I heard the land was burning Like the bonfires of São João I asked God up there in his heaven What is happening to us now? What a hellfire, what a furnace Not a tree was left alive And all my cattle, they laid there dying And even my horse steed did not survive And the white wing dove has flown now, far away from this backland So I say now, "adeus Rosinha" Know in your heart, I'll be back again “Intonce” eu disse adeus Rosinha Guarda contigo meu coração Now I live in this big city Such a long long way away But when I hear that the rain is falling Back to my home I'll return someday And the land one day will blossom Like the green that's in your eyes And I assure you, my dear Rosinha I'll be back in, right by your side Eu te asseguro, não chores não, viu Que eu voltarei, viu, meu coração
