3 INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE
Different methods (nondestructive) are applied to understand the wood formation and properties. The μ-XRF technique possibilities to analyze wood structures and their relation with growth conditions (e.g.: Nutrient uptake).  Plasmons can couple with a photon to create another quasiparticle called a plasma polariton. 5 INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE
This presentation show the preliminary results of the exploratory application of μ-XRF to evaluate the chemical elements in annual tree-rings of 17-years old Pinus taeda trees.  Plasmons can couple with a photon to create another quasiparticle called a plasma polariton. LAIM- Laboratório de Anatomia, Identificação e Densitometria de Raios X em Madeira

6 MATERIAL AND METHODS SAMPLING:
6 trees per nutritional treatments of cellulosic residues: 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 t/ha was selected (100 t/ha = N, P, K, Ca, Mg ; 210, 740, 90, 480,130 kg/ha) - 36 radial wood samples of P. taeda trees were collected (DBH). 0 t/ha 20 t/ha 40 t/ha  Plasmons can couple with a photon to create another quasiparticle called a plasma polariton. 60 t/ha 80 t/ha 100 t/ha LAIM- Laboratório de Anatomia, Identificação e Densitometria de Raios X em Madeira

7 MATERIAL AND METHODS INSTRUMENTAL SETUP:
(1) 18 radial wood samples were analyzed using a energy dispersive X-ray microfluorescence spectrometer (μ-EDXRF. 30 keV, 600 uA). A line in the wood region (64 points) was selected and the tree-rings microchemistry was obtained (time analysis 20 seconds per point). 8 MATERIAL AND METHODS INSTRUMENTAL SETUP:
(2) 18 radial wood samples were analyzed in the energy dispersive X-ray microfluorescence spectrometer (μ-EDXRF, 1300 Shimadzu model), Rh tube (50 keV and 200 uA), Si (Li) detector cooled with liquid nitrogen, for constructed microchemistry map. 9 MATERIAL AND METHODS DATA ANALYZE (in process):
Will be obtained the values of X-ray transmission intensity and the chemical elements with atomic number greater than 24 (Cr) and will be normalized  with  Rh Kα Compton scattering to minimize the effect of density difference of the growth rings in the same sample. Will be evaluated detection limit: the lowest amount or minimum quantity of a substance that can be distinguished. © Rosen (2012) LAIM- Laboratório de Anatomia, Identificação e Densitometria de Raios X em Madeira

10 PRELIMINARY RESULTS The main chemical elements found in the wood samples were: Na, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe and Zn. LAIM- Laboratório de Anatomia, Identificação e Densitometria de Raios X em Madeira

13 PRELIMINARY CONCLUSIONS
The μ-XRF showed potential application for the detection of chemical elements in the tree-rings of P. taeda trees. Despite a semi-quantitative method allowed the detection of mineral elements in P. taeda wood. Also, constitutes a non-destructive methodology to reconstruct dendronutritional and dendrochemistry tree-ring series of P. taeda trees. 14 FUTURE CHALLENGES Understand and minimize the effect of the wood density in the sample. Mathematic corrections? Understanding the detection limit to select potential elements. Construction of a protocol to analyze longer samples of wood (tree-ring series). LAIM- Laboratório de Anatomia, Identificação e Densitometria de Raios X em Madeira
