8 Unit of Translation Segment of a text which the translator sees and treats as a single cognitive unit so as to establish an equivalence. A UT is the starting point for any translation, and it changes and varies according to the translator’s needs. The UT may be a single word, a phrase, one or more sentences or even a larger unit. The larger the unit, the better chances for a more accurate translation.

9 A wrestler in a tight corner
A prisoner plans his escape A wrestler in a tight corner Rocky got up from the mat, planning his escape He hesitated a moment and thought. Things were not going well. What bothered him most was being held, especially since the charge against him had been weak. He considered his present situation. The lock that held him was strong, but he thought he could break it. Adapted from Anderson at al., In: Yule, George, 1983 Is he alone? What happened to him? Where is he? 9

17 Find the units of translation in the text below and translate it
Find the units of translation in the text below and translate it. Which method(s) of translation did you use? Respect the culture where you work It’s a mistake to ignore the little things that contribute to a company’s lifestyle. Start paying attention. Pay attention to how people dress, and whether they leave their office door open or shut. Pay attention to how often they interrupt people’s work for a small talk. Pay attention to the little things. They do count.

18 Respeite a cultura de onde você trabalha
É um erro ignorar as pequenas coisas que contribuem para o estilo de uma empresa. Comece a prestar atenção. Preste atenção a como as pessoas se vestem e se elas deixam a porta do escritório (da sala) delas aberta ou fechada. Preste atenção se elas interrompem o trabalho das pessoas para uma conversa casual. Preste atenção às pequenas coisas. Elas realmente contam.
