This graph plots tests results on how the backup speed is positively impacted with higher deduplication results. When deduplication is 0 (which is rarely the case), you will be limited to the speed at which you can process unique data. This process is primarily dependent on the individual CPU power of the host that dedupes the data and of course at which rate you can read the data from the client and send it over the network. You can see the difference when backing up a dataset with 99% dedupe versus a dataset with 0% deduplication. The red line shows the backup speed when just deduplication is enabled and compression is disabled. The blue line shows what backup performance can be achieved when dedupe and compression are enabled. Backup Exec™ 2012 Server Symantec SRD Recovery Disk Simplified System Protection Job Server Protected Server Fails X Server Recovered Transcript: Now leveraging the powerful Symantec recovery disk, which you might recognize from the Symantec system recovery product, Backup Exec 2012 now allows administrators to easily restore backups of servers from a bare metal state, right. So for example, I've been backing up a server and that server has some kind of critical storage failure. Its RAID array crashes and that server simply does not function any more. I can now, you know, rebuild that RAID array and then use the recovery disk to do a full recovery of that backup to that bare metal state and get that server back up and running exactly as it was at that point in time when that backup was taken. Now it's important to note that to enable this bare metal recovery ability servers must be backed up using a new full system protection feature in Backup Exec 2012; and it's called a simplified system protection. Now the good news is this is enabled by default. So in most cases if you don't make any changes to your default backup job selections then all of your backups will be enabled for this cool new bare metal restore function. And the addition of the recovery disk to the Backup Exec family makes the restore process very, very easy. You literally boot the machine with the recovery disk, go through a very short wizard and then off it goes rebuilding your server from bare metal. It takes the pain out of that manual process mentioned earlier. You know, gone are the days of manually rebuilding that server. There's no longer a need to install the operating system, patch the operating system, install your applications, driver updates, reboots, reboots, so that's now gone, right. With Backup Exec 2012 simply use the recovery disk to restore that entire server in minutes from a bare metal state and you're back up and running. Author's Original Notes: New! Integrated Bare Metal Recovery Another key enhancement in Backup Exec 2012 is the integration of bare metal restore capabilities. Leveraging the powerful Symantec Recovery Disk, also used in the Symantec System Recovery product, administrators can easily restore critical business servers from a bare metal state. Bare metal restore operations can be performed using backups stored to either disk or tape storage, including backups that have been stored in deduplicated format. When performing a bare metal restore operation from a backup set stored in a deduplication storage folder, the restore must be done using backup data stored on a remote Backup Exec 2012 server. The Backup Exec 2012 server performs rehydration tasks against the data to be restored, which is then transmitted to the remote server to be restored. Bare metal restore capabilities come as a part of the Backup Exec 2012 product; no additional license is necessary. In order to enable bare metal recovery for a protected server, the backup job must be configured for full system protection. This feature is known as Simplified System Protection. Simplified System Protection ensures that the backup set contains all the critical operating system components needed to perform a bare metal recovery. By default, backup jobs in Backup Exec 2012 are enabled for Simplified System Protection. Symantec Backup Exec™ 2012 12
