» A princesa D. Joana, filha do rei Afonso V, revelou desde muito tenra idade uma grande vocação religiosa. » Esta filha primogénita, apesar de ser obrigada a viver na Corte pela sua posição, afastava-se o mais possível de festas e convívios e passava grande parte do seu tempo a rezar e a meditar. » A princesa era, dizia-se, muito bela e teve muitos pretendentes, entre estes muitas cabeças coroadas, mas a todos recusou alegando a sua intenção de se tornar freira.

» Com a autorização real, entrou D. Joana para Odivelas, mudando-se mais tarde para o Convento de Santa Clara de Coimbra mas acabando por resolver professar no Convento de Jesus, em Aveiro. » Esta última decisão foi contestada tanto pelo rei como pelo povo, dado que o Convento de Jesus era muito pobre e, na opinião geral, indigno de uma princesa. » Por outro lado, o povo discordava da vocação da princesa e não queriam ela professasse.

» Perante tanta discórdia D. Joana decidiu não professar, mas declarou que usaria o véu de noviça para sempre e insistiu em ingressar no Convento de Jesus, vivendo na humildade e na pobreza e aplicando as rendas que possuía no socorro dos pobres. » A sua caridade era tão grande que depressa ficou conhecida como santa. Mas a bela princesa adoeceu de peste e morreu em grande sofrimento. » Quando o seu enterro passou pelos jardins do convento deu-se um facto insólito: as flores que ela havia tratado em vida caiam sobre o seu caixão prestando-lhe uma última homenagem. » Após este primeiro milagre, muitos outros foram atribuídos a Santa Joana Princesa, levando a que, duzentos anos depois, o Papa Inocêncio XII concedesse a beatificação a esta infanta de Portugal.

» Princess Joan, daughter of King Afonso V, at a very young age showed a great religious vocation. The eldest daughter, despite being forced to live by her position in court, distanced herself as much as possible from parties and gatherings and spent a lot of time praying and meditating. » The princess was very beautiful and had many fervent admirers, among them there were many crowned heads. » Nevertheless she refused all of them as she wanted to become a nun. » So, Princess Joana was granted royal permission to enter in a Convent nearby. Later on she moved to the Convent of Santa Clara de Coimbra but she thought this was quite a rich convent and her intention was to help the poor.

» In due course, and without the royal consent, the Princess decided to get into an extremely poor convent – Convent of Jesus, in Aveiro. » The people didn’t like her resolution at all. Everybody argued that Convent of Jesus was a degrading and undignified place for a Princess to live in. » Yet her charity was so great that soon Princess Joana became known for her humbleness and dedication to the poor. » One day the beautiful Princess became seriously ill with high fever and died in huge pain. » It was said she died from a pestilence.

» When her funeral was passing right by the gardens of the convent, the flowers she had once carefully grown, fell on her coffin paying her a last tribute. » After this first miracle many others followed and were credited to Princess Joana. Therefore, two hundred years later, Pope Innocent XII canonized her. » It was then that she became Princess Saint Joana of Aveiro.
