Socorridos Multipurpose System 1991 - 1996 1991 - 1996 Socorridos Multipurpose System The Socorridos Multipurpose System is the largest and most significant hydro engineering project in public water-supply, irrigation, and hydro-power in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (“RAM”). São Vicente Serra de Água 15.5 km of tunnels and open-air channels upper reservoir capacity of 7.500m3 hydroelectric plant (3x8 MW). Curral das Freiras The management of these infrastructures makes possible to transfer water from the north of Madeira (with major water availability) to the south of the island (where is located the majority of population). Ribeira Brava Covão Contribution to electricity production basically restricted to the rainy part of the year. Campanário Sª. Quitéria Socorridos Câmara de Lobos

Socorridos Multipurpose System Socorridos Hydro Power Plant reversible 2004 - 2006 Main goals: To transform the Socorridos Hydroelectric Power Plant - a winter-only power-station, manifestly dependent on rainfall into a reversible-function power plant used throughout the year; To contribute to install new renewables, namely wind farms; To improve the public water-supply system and of irrigation dependent on the southern arm of the North channel; São Vicente 4 Serra de Água Curral das Freiras Main components (projects): Covão tunnel (upper reservoir) Socorridos gallery (lower reservoir) Pumping station Water storage reinforcement 1 Ribeira Brava Covão Campanário 2 Socorridos 3 Câmara de Lobos

2004 - 2006 Covão tunnel (upper reservoir) Socorridos gallery (lower reservoir) Pumping station 5 250 m lenght, between Campanário and reservoir of Covão (7.500 m3), allowing a total storage capacity of 40 000 m3. Water storage reinforcement on Encumeada and Canal do norte tunnels The Socorridos gallery has a capacity of 40 000 m3, allowing to store the turbinated water in the hydro power plant of Socorridos. Based on 4 pumps of 3,7 MW each, and all auxiliary electromecanic equipment allowing to put the storage water in the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, during the night (off peak period). Campanário Covão The reinforcement of Encumeada and Canal do Norte tunnels, make possible an additional water storage of 45 000 m3, wich enables a better management of hydro resources in Socorridos system. Socorridos

Socorridos Hydro Power Plant, Gallery and Pumping Station

Socorridos Hydro Power Plant reversible Calheta Hydroelectric Reversible System – Calheta III Socorridos Hydro Power Plant reversible Financing of the four projects (reversible system) EEM (50%) FEDER (50%)* * Under the terms of the Autonomous Region of Madeira's funding-programme POPRAM III (from the Portuguese "Programa Operacional Plurifundos da Região Autónoma da Madeira"). The joint participation of FEDER, approved on the 29th of July 2004, guarantees an incentive up to 50% of the total cost of the project, with the remaining cost being entirely assumed by EEM. (*) – Received 15.2 Millions of Euros from FEDER

Calheta Hydroelectric Reversible System – Calheta III Why Calheta III? Limited capacity of Socorridos Reversible System for integration new renewables (only 40.000 m3 of water storage capacity) Accumulated experience and confidence with Socorridos, specially in the pumping system (high height) To strongly contribute for the expected targets for 2020: 50% electricity production based on renewables, in line with orientation of regional politics for energy To constitute a strategic reserve of water, for public consumption, irrigation and the electricity system managing.

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Main Components 1 - Pico da Urze Dam 31 meters height 1 000 000 m3 of storage capacity Flooded in 7ha

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Main Components 2 - Calheta Dam 34,5 meters height 73 750m3 total storage volume for the retention of the water turbinated in Calheta III, for subsequent pumping to Pico da Urze’s reservoir. Includes a machinery room where the boosters are housed, each one with 1 MW, to power the main pumps of the Calheta’s Pumping Station Flooded area by the water plan is 6.360 m2

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Main Components 3 - Calheta III Hydroelectric Power Plant and Calheta Pumping Station 2 generators with 15 MW of power each (2x15 MW) 3 pumps for Calheta Pumping Station, each one with 4,9 MW

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Main Components 4 - Penstock/pump up pipe 1500 mm steel tubing 3.460m length, ensuring a dual role, functioning either as penstock (powering at peak load hours) or as a pump up pipe (pumping water during load diagram’s valley hours from Calheta and Paul stations to Pico da Urze’s bayou). 5 - Water Pumping Station of Paul 2x150 kW electric pumps will be connected to the penstock/pump up pipe, through a conducting stretch allowing, this way, to pump the collected water by Paul I water channel (Levada do Paul I), below the Pico da Urze dam, and also by Paul II water channel (Levada do Paul II), both to Pico da Urze bayou.

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Main Components 6 - Paul II Water Channel (Levada do Paul) Expansion 10,6 km length between the Juncal stream (Ribeira do Juncal) and the forebay of Paul the work will be done only between the beginning and km 8,6 and will consist in raising about 25 cm the side walls of the water channel in order to increase its transport capacity. 7 - Paul Old Water Channel (Levada Velha do Paul) Expansion main source of supply to Pico da Urze’s bayou 1.600 meters length , between the Lajeado stream (Ribeira do Lajeado - where it takes in the water) and the Alecrim stream (where it gives back the intake water) The work will consist in building a channel of variable section (in concrete material) in order to increase the carrying capacity of the water channel and also in the installation of a restraint of solid material in the water intake area, giving it back in the right bank of Pico da Urze’s bayou.

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Main Components 8 - Lombo Salão Water Channel (Levada do Lombo do Salão) Renewal 1.690 meters long, located between Calheta I Hydroelectric Power Plant and Lombo do Salão forebay This refurbishment aims to reduce water flow losses during its path, increasing this way, the water delivery to irrigation and adduction to Calheta II Hydroelectric Power Plant (Central de Inverno da Calheta - Calheta II).

Calheta Hydroelectric System Calheta III - New reversible system Expected Results - Electricity 29 GWh (about 30% of annual average hydropower production), of which 18 GWh will result from direct water exploration and the remaining 11 GWh will be the result from pumped water flow, using wind energy resources. Integration of more 25 MW of wind power, with an estimated annual production of about 60 GWh (equivalent to about 7% of the total production in 2010 in Madeira Island).
