8 An illustration of international fishing vessels movements on the ICES area (NEAFC VMS data). These are not fishing sets but trajectories of all fishing vessels from NEAFC data base. This figure recalls us for the management units of the “Azorean fishing resources”. The majority of the commercial important resources (Alfonsinos, wreckfish, bluemouth, black and white scabbard fish, deep water sharks) are considered shared stocks, which mean that assessment and management should be done under an international Committee and so there is a specific institutional arrangement for science, management and decision. An example of a acepted management unit is the Blacksopt seabream (scientific arguments based on mark recapture data, genetics, meristics, etc). Pinto, C. et al, 2009

9 Fleets: Pinho and Menezes (2009)
It is considered a small scale fishery. Seasonal plasticity, meaning that one vessel target different resources along the year in function of the abundance, price, market, etc. Different vessels class operating for the same resources – Multifleet. One vessels use different gears, sometimes targeting the same fish assemblage - multigear fleet. Pinho and Menezes (2009)

ICES Epada preto, escamuda, melga, tubarões de prof. Coastal Enquadramento: O que são espécies demersais? Portaria 101/2002 de 24 de Outubro define: Demersais (>400m), Profundidade ( m), Grande profundidade (>700m). Para ICES profundidade é >400m. Para FAO >200m. A definição não é estanque e é dependente da fase de desenvolvimento do ciclo de vida da espécie (por exemplo, chicharro ou cherne c/ fases pelágicas e bento demersais), distribuição diferencial por tamanhos com a profundidade (Ex. Goraz), etc. Na prática definimos comunidades com base no pico da distribuição em profundidade. Contudo as diferentes componentes da frota (multi frota) tendem a ter um regime de operação que captura exemplares das diferentes comunidades (multi espécies) utilizando diferentes tipos de artes (pescaria multiartes). 11 Fishing areas: Grey areas are the depth strata (<100m) available for fishing. The entire EEZ area available for fishing is already occupied. Spatial descontinuity on the habitat – Multiareas.

12 Landings (total): Total demersal landings in weight increase until 1998 and decrease thereafter. Value start decrease at 2008.

13 Landings by species: Landings by species shows a decrease trend of the majority demersal species since the 90ths. However, a target effect is observed for example for the wreck fish in A particular concern is related with the seabream trend for the last 2 years, where landings represents only 50% of the TAC.

14 Landings (value): Seabream controls the fishery dynamics because the high price.

17 Assessment target species (Seabream):
There is no validating analytical assessment. So the stock status is uncertain. Actual fishing effort should be decrease 33% to the F0.1 management strategy (precautionary reference point) and 53% to the F40% (target reference point). However, there is no significant trend on the standardized abundance indices or on the biological data from survey or the fishery to support such level of overexploitation. This may be a result of a lack of spatial resolution on the data analysis. Note that different input options of life history may give different results. Z=0,4-0,5 F= 0,2-0,3

18 Assessment other species:
Trends of some important commercial demersal/deep-water species from the survey abundance indices and commercial landings. There is no agreement between these two time series, as expected, sometimes with conflicting trends (one increase while other increase) due to target effects for example. Note that for some species ICES do not recognize an Azorean management unit.
