1 Práticas de Linguagem e Design: algumas questões de usabilidade no
contexto da web social Fernanda Maria Pereira Freire Núcleo de Informática Aplicada à Educação (NIED) André Constantino da Silva Instituto de Computação (IC) University of Campinas (UNICAMP) São Paulo, Brazil III WAIHCWS Porto de Galinhas, october 25th 2011

2 Agenda Contextualization Objetive Data Analysis Final Considerations

3 what know about the other... Text Product Conditions
Speak/write could be understand, behind use a specific language, use sintatic, semantic and speechs adjustments as text product conditions. language shared knowledgement subject what know about the other... Text Product Conditions Who you speak; When; About; Where; How; What do you know about the other and the subject, etc.

4 what know about the other... Text Product Conditions
In the case of language practice when computer mediates the communcation, the user interface can be one more element of the “text production conditions”. So the interface can influence the way the user uses the language. language shared knowledgement subject what know about the other... User Interface Text Product Conditions

5 Contextualization Linguistic Researches show that some sintactics, semantics and speechs adjustments made in digital language practice (CMC) could be interpreted as consequence of user interface influences do in a particular practice (Freire, 2003, 2007, 2010; Freire et al., 2007)

6 B at e- p a p o Think about what you want to say
choose which kind of sound is related with what do you pretend to say choose which kind of image is related with what do you pretend to say  address - explicitally – the text and choose the receivers  analyze what kind of action do you pretend with your text

7 Contextualization Other researches for applications development show that social practice analysis and observation of the language use can subside user interface design decision for CMC aplications (Oeiras, 2005; Oeiras et al., 2001, 2005, 2006)

8 Coordenated Chat – “assembléia”
(C) messsages (A) watchers (B) coordenator (D) messages write and send (Oeiras, 2005)

9 Reciprocity So there is reciprocity influence between social practices of language use and design decisions

10 Research Objective Correlate linguistic analysis and usability problems using usability heuristics (Nielsen, 1994)

11 Data Analysis Two real Web Social interaction were selected:
- Entertainment: social network - Educational context: e-learning course

12 Data Analysis Two real Web Social interaction were selected:
- Entertainment: social network How Orkut Forum design forced linguistic adjustments on user texts to support the communcation - Educational context: e-learning course

13 Orkut Forum - Social network: Orkut - Tool: Fórum
- Community: “Livros, Textos e Redação” - Objetive: experience exchange in writing - Users respect interaction rules - Voluntary and informal participation

14 Orkut Forum Ordered by date (newer to older)

15 Orkut Forum Ordered by date (older to newer) Lima, 2010

16 Linguistic Operation “condensação” - refer to last message
Text divided in title + message + message (to do that the user needs answer for herself!) probabily the user intends hightlight the text that she wishes to be corrected Lima, 2010

17 Orkut Forum Lima, 2010

18 Lima, 2010 In the next day...Leandro answers:
Two days later...Altair answers: Lima, 2010

19 Orkut Forum Leandro and ALTAIR began the message with the receiver name, Joice. Optional? In the case of this Forum, the receiver name is not optional. Why? As the messages are cronollogically ordered – from older to newer – there is a complication for interactions directed to some people. Used Solution: “operação de determinação”

20 TelEduc is different:

21 O Fórum do Orkut “This message is about what?”

22 “Recognize instead of remember”
Orkut Forum If another member wants to contribute with Joice, but there are more messages between their messages? He has to remember the context, because the message could be in older pages. “Recognize instead of remember”

23 “Is this message the last
O Fórum do Orkut “Is this message the last one that I read?”

24 “Recognize instead of remember”
Orkut Forum The tool does not hightlight the non-read messages, só the user can not identified them quickly. Joice can use clues: search for her name. Problem: If one member post a message without her name? Joice needs to read all messages posted after her message and discover by the content “Recognize instead of remember”

25 In the next day...Leandro ansers:
Two days later...Altair answers: Five days later...Joice thanks “The guys”

26 “Recognize instead of remember”
Orkut Forum It seems that is difficult to her remember who talked to her One fact that demonstrates it is she called them as “oi pessoal” (“Hi, guys”) “Recognize instead of remember”

27 Data Analysis Two real Web Social interaction were selected:
- Entertainment: social network How Orkut Forum design forced linguistic adjustments on user texts to support the communcation - Educational context: e-learning course How TelEduc Portfolio design promoted collaborative work amplifying writing, reading and rewriting practices

28 TelEduc Portfolio - Environment: TelEduc - Tool: Discussion Forum
- Course: Formação de Professores na área de Linguagem e Letramento - Activity Goal: write a memorial about reading and writing learning - Users respect well defined rules (teacher and student rules)

29 Opinion exchange Many versions

30 “Recognize instead of remember”
Writing a memorial goal activity sharing comment posted by student and teachers with different colors quickly recognize of news (bold highlight) “Recognize instead of remember”

31 Set of memorials colaborativally wrote
Writing a memorial goal activity sharing comment posted by student and teachers with different colors quickly recognize of news (bold highlight) “Recognize instead of remember” Language practice was influenced!

32 Final Considerations Future works: Exploratory study
Results show linguistic operations that appears in certain context may be used because an usability problems in the interface In the case of analysed data, problems related with the heuristic Recognize instead of remember Future works: Do heuristics evaluations (standards) identify problems that were showed? Is it possible by linguistic analyses identifiy usability problems related with other heuristics?
