43 EUA Institutional Evaluation Programme / Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra / July 2007 FRAME OF REFERENCE …Research is strong in ESAC, given its close association with CERNAS, which covers forestry economics and management, food technology, environment, chemistry and rural development in a broad multidisciplinary perspective. CERNAS is rated good by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia [FCT], anticipates making a bid to the EUs seventh Framework Research Programme [FP7] and is seeking to capitalise on the regional structures being built by government to deliver European Regional Development Fund [ERDF] funding. Significantly, the existence of CERNAS was felt to be an important factor in the governments approval of the ESAC Bologna Master applications. (p. 9) CONCLUSIONS …prioritising areas in which IPC aims to become a field-leader, as is the case with CERNAS, and elaborating a focused research policy. (p. 19)

44 3. Are interested parties (in policy, industry and society) being consulted before setting out research programmes?
