3 It is a semi-arid region where water management in quantity and quality (potability) is a vital variable for the local population. This area is considered as Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) area. 9 million tons of P 2 O 5 and 79.500 tons of U 3 O 8 The study area

5 Constraints Following Brazilian law, areas with ore reserves associated with uranium and thorium (NORM areas) need to be investigated aiming a: radioecology evaluation and radiological environmental impact assessment based on an environmental radiological monitoring program.

6 Objective Considering that local populations use surface waters without any treatment for all kinds of uses, This study aims to evaluate the activity concentrations (AC) of 210 Pb in surface waters of the Santa Quitéria region; statistical analytical tools with univariate and multivariate approaches were used.tools

7 Material & Methods Surface water samples (1L) were collected at six points (01SQ-06SQ) During 17 month Acidified with 1mL HNO 3 Filtered on an acetate filter (0.45  m) – Filtrate → soluble fraction – Retained material → particulate fraction 210 Pb AC were determined in all these fractions

8 Results : Descriptive statistics AC in Bq L -1 ; Stand. Dev. = standard deviation, Sol. = Soluble; Part. = Particulate; N = number of samples per point

9 Results : univariate analysis Z test concludes: all fractions are similar, when compared all together. ANOVA: there are differences between the fractions, although it does not indicated which are different and which are equal. This assumption is corroborated by Fisher’s test, which identified different groups ranked according to sample activity concentrations.

10 Results: Fisher test Higher concentrations Lower concentrations The particulate fractions showed higher activity concentrations of 210 Pb than the soluble fractions.

11 Results: PCA The principal component analysis (PCA) showed a clear distinction between the soluble and particulate fractions

12 Results: Cluster different behaviors are observed between soluble and particulate fractions

13 Conclusions The radioecology of 210 Pb in the Santa Quitéria area is complex. There are differences in the activity concentrations of 210 Pb: – between the sampling points. – between the soluble and particulate phases with AC particulate > AC soluble Local populations should use filtered water in order to eliminate all solid suspension and thus reduce residual AC of 210 Pb.
