Introduction The Law School enjoys cultural and scientific autonomy, being a public legal person. As an element of the University of Lisbon, Law School is integrated with the other schools of the University to complement the knowledge, opening to an interdisciplinary approach in the provision of community services and advocating for an environment compatible with the achievement of the human person.

History Decree of 22 March 1911 (followed by the University Constitution of 19 April the same year) predicted the existence of a "School of Economics and Politics" at the University of Lisbon. However, this creation was only two years later. The budget law of 30 June 1913 authorized the government to organize the School of Economic and Political Sciences of UL, "which will be called the Faculty of Social Studies and Law. In 1918 this school would be renamed the School of Law. Its first director was Afonso Costa. Located first in an old building (The Palace Valmor) in Mártires da Pátria, the College would be transferred to the current building of the University City in In 1997 begun the redevelopment and expansion in order to endow it with a computerized library and classroom, research offices, three new classrooms,an auditorium and conference room for a simulated court hearings

History From a few dozen students at the beginning, the faculty received several hundreds in the 40 and 50 and would exceed the 4,000 in the 70 and 80. The mainstream of contemporary legal thinking has been and continues to be expressed, in the light of a critical perspective that always encouraged, regardless of ideological options. And their teachers or their graduates, have played a significant role in the successive legislative reforms in the country since the Constitution the great codes.

History Is fair to recognize that, regardless of ideological perspectives, the spirit of the Law Faculty of Lisbon was always a spirit of freedom. Besides, of course, follow the vicissitudes university, the Faculty has reflected very closely, jumps and leaps of political history, almost like a barometer. There was always a strong awareness of students to political movements more significant, they were always many teachers, assistants and former students in government posts, and including three professors of the Faculty were heads of government - Afonso Costa on first Republic, Marcello Caetano in the authoritarian regime and Palma Carlos after April 25, 1974, and among graduates from the School include the first two Presidents of the Republic civilians elected by universal suffrage - Mário Soares and Jorge Sampaio.

The Law School minister three courses of study leading to degrees: a bachelors degree (1. cycle), the Master's in Law (2. cycle ) and PhD degrees in Law (3. cycle) in several areas. The Law School minister still postgraduate courses, including courses and graduate, not conducive to obtaining a degree.

New challenges At present, while continuing to give its contribution to law careers and various aspects of Portuguese life, the Faculty focuses your efforts on the six domains: a) In refurbishments of the Bologna Process, in which, despite all the difficulties, we attempted to maintain a cultural and scientific high level b) In a classroom learning and active of all o Evaluation and Continuous Day and evening courses (those intended for working students). c) The first cycle of studies as in the 2nd cycle, new disciplines(Fundamental Rights, Planning Law, Environmental Law, Law of Securities, Law Society, International Commerce, etc.)…

New challenges d) The accomplishment of courses post-graduate in new areas, interdisciplinary, and yet each year, courses of extension in, debates and conferences on current issues or reforms; e)Exchanger and international cooperation, especially in Brazil and the African country of Portuguese language; f) Ensuring education at the Military Academy, at the Instituto Superior Técnico and Technical College.
