ASMA - MAGNITUDE DO PROBLEMA 150 milhões asmáticos em todo o mundo Prevalência aumentando na maior parte dos países (20–50% a cada 10 anos) Causa significativa de falta ao trabalho / escola Gastos muito altos com Saúde 1 milhão de mortes desnecessárias a cada década PLANO NACIONAL DE CONTROLE DA ASMA Magnitude of the problem Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. Asthma occurs in all countries but appears more common in affluent populations. The increase in prevalence may be related to environmental factors, including increasing exposure to allergens and pollutants. Asthma can impair quality of life and be a major cause of absence from school or work. Mortality data are of limited value – they are available for relatively few countries and trends are difficult to interpret as a result of changing practice in coding and diagnosis. WHO/NHLBI. PREVALÊNCIA DA ASMA - ADULTOS Australia Denmark UK Ireland New Zealand Norway USA Portugal Sweden Switzerland Estonia Netherlands Iceland Greece Austria France Spain Belgium Germany Italy India Algeria Prevalence of asthma in adults This slide is based on data from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. The survey assessed the variation in the prevalence of asthma across Europe in adults aged 20–44 years using the same methodology in all the 48 participating centres (in 22 countries, 17 European and five non-European). This slide shows the annual prevalence of asthma symptoms, recorded as wheezing (apart from colds). Individual points show prevalence values obtained from different centres in each country. The study showed wide variations both within and between countries in the prevalence of all conditions. Worldwide, prevalence was generally lower in northern, central and southern Europe, and higher in the British Isles, New Zealand, Australia and the USA. European Community Respiratory Health Survey. There were wide differences in the prevalence of asthma symptoms, with up to 15-fold differences between countries. The prevalence of wheezing ranged from 4.1% to 32.1% in the younger age group and from 2.1% to 32.2% in the older children. Prevalence was particularly high in English-speaking countries and in Latin America. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) Steering Committee. CUSTO FINANCEIRO DA ASMA Economic costs of asthma In addition to the clear and impressive social impacts of asthma, there are also substantial economic costs. The economic burden is reflected in: Direct medical costs (health services used for prevention and treatment of asthma) Indirect costs (expressed in terms of the value of asthma-related morbidity, premature mortality and productivity loss) Intangible costs (associated with the value of psychosocial impacts of asthma) The economic burden of asthma is substantial but it is likely to be reduced with improvements in prevention and management strategies.
