Estudando a humildade, vejamos como se comportava Jesus no exercício da sublime virtude. Studying humbleness, let’s see how Jesus behaved in the practice of this sublime virtue.

Decerto, no tempo em que ao mundo deveria surgir a mensagem da Boa Nova, poderia permanecer na glória celeste e fazer-se representar entre os homens pela pessoa de mensageiros angélicos, mas preferiu descer, Ele mesmo, ao chão da Terra, e experimentar-lhe as vicissitudes.

Certainly, at the time when the message of the Gospel should have arisen in the world, he could have remained in the heavenly glory and be represented among humans by angelic messengers, but he preferred to descend to the Earth‘s ground and experience its ups and downs.

Indubitavelmente, contava com poder bastante para anular a sentença de Herodes que mandava decepar a cabeça dos recém-natos de sua condição, com o fim de impedir-lhe a presença; entretanto, afastou-se prudentemente para longínquo rincão, até que a descabida exigência fosse necessariamente proscrita.

Undoubtedly, he had enough power to annull Herod’s sentence that ordered to cut off the heads of newborn babies like him, in order to deter Jesus presence, however, he wisely stepped back in a far corner, until this unreasonable demand was revoked.

Dispunha de vastos recursos para se impor em Jerusalém, ao pé dos doutores que lhe negavam autoridade no ensino das novas revelações; contudo, retirou-se sem mágoa em demanda de remota província, a valer-se dos homens rudes que lhe acolhiam a palavra consoladora.

He had vast resources to impose his presence in Jerusalem, before the Doctors of the Law who disregarded his authority in the teachings of the new revelations, however, he left without sorrow to a remote province, to the rough humans who welcomed his consoling word.

Possuía suficiente virtude para humilhar a filha de Magdala, dominada pela força das sombras; no entanto, silenciou a própria grandeza moral para chamá-la docemente ao reajuste da vida.

He had enough virtues to humiliate the daughter of Magdala, dominated by the forces of shadow, however, he silenced his own moral greatness to sweetly call her to the readjustment of life.

Certo, detinha elementos para desfazer-se de Judas, o aprendiz insensato; porém, apesar de tudo, conservou-o até o último dia de luta, entre aqueles que mais amava. Certainly, he had the means to get rid of Judas, the unwise apprentice, nonetheless, he kept him until the last day of struggle, amongst those he loved the most.

Com uma simples palavra, poderia confundir os juízes que o rebaixavam perante Barrabás, autor de crimes confessos; contudo, abraçou a cruz da morte, rogando perdão para os próprios carrascos.

With a single word, he could confuse the judges before Barabbas, author of confessed crimes, however, he embraced the cross of death, begging forgiveness for his own executioners.

Por fim, poderia condenar Saulo de Tarso, o implacável perseguidor, a penas soezes, pela intransigência perversa com que aniquilava a plantação do Evangelho nascente; mas buscou-o, em pessoa, às portas de Damasco, visitando-lhe o coração, por sabê-lo enganado na direção em que se movia.

Finally, he could condemn Saul of Tarsus, the relentless persecutor, to vile sentences, for the perverse intransigence that annihilated the plantation of nascent Gospel, but he sought him in person at the gates of Damascus, visiting his heart, for knowing he was misled in his ways.

Com Jesus, percebemos que a humildade nem sempre surge da pobreza ou da enfermidade que tanta vez somente dignificam lições regeneradoras, e sim que o talento celeste é atitude da alma que olvida a própria luz para levantar os que se arrastam nas trevas e que procura sacrificar a si própria, nos carreiros empedrados do Mundo, para que os outros aprendam, sem constrangimento ou barulho, a encontrar o caminho para as bênçãos do Céu.

With Jesus, we see that humbleness does not always come from poverty or disease that so often dignify regenerative lessons, but only that heavenly talent is the attitude of the soul that forgets its very light to lift those that creep in the darkness and that seek to sacrifice itself in the cobblestone paths of the world, so that others may learn, without embarassment or noise, to find the way to the blessings of Heaven.
