4 Content-Based Instruction (CBI)
What is Content-Based Instruction? It is an instruction method that combines learning of a language with some other contents, mostly academic subjects (Mathematics, History, Geography etc.) It teaches subject and language (L2) simultaneously. “The language becomes the medium for learning content” (Mohan 1986).

5 Content-Based Instruction (CBI)
Goals of Teachers Using this Method Teachers want their students to achieve mastery of both language and content Role of the Teacher Teachers should set the objectives of the learning process (what should be achieved at the end of the lesson) Teachers need to create activities that will help students to learn both the language and the content Teachers guide students during the learning process Role of the Students Students must engage actively (take part in activities, do exercises etc.) They should understand and use both the content and the language they are studying

Some Characteristics of the Teaching/Learning Process Authentic texts should be dealt with Instruction through the use of visuals, repetitions, examples Activities addressing both content and language Discourse organization of the content (how language is used in a particular subject) Students should be involved in the learning process (through different activities)

Some Advantages of this Method Students are more motivated (due to the relevance) Language is a meaningful medium for the learning of the content How Is Evaluation Accomplished? On students’ language and content knowledge Teachers correct students errors by either giving them the correct form or encouraging them to self-correct

Teacher Preparation Teachers need to have adequate knowledge of the language and the content being taught Teachers should possess appropriate teaching skills Teachers should use different instructional techniques Teachers should supply students with appropriate materials
