PASSIVE VOICE Do we know who did it? Observe: ? stole my car. What happened?  My car was stolen. No!

PASSIVE VOICE Observe: The journalist wrote an article. What happened?  An article was written by the journalist. Are we interested in who did it? No!

PASSIVE VOICE So we use the Passive Voice when we… My car was stolen. …don’t know who did something: …are more interested in what happened: An article was written by the journalist. It is used in newspapers and in formal notices.

PASSIVE VOICE What do we need to form the Passive? wrote was written (v. to Write, Past Simple) v. to Be, Past Simple Main verb, Past Participle

PASSIVE VOICE What changes occur? The journalist wrote an article. An article was written by the journalist. SubjectActive verbActive object Passive SubjectPassive verb By-phrase (sometimes optional)

PASSIVE VOICE VERB CHANGES was/were stolenstole Past Simple am/is/are writtenwrite/writes Present Simple PASSIVE VOICEACTIVE VOICEVERB TENSES

PASSIVE VOICE More examples… Children and adults watch television. (v. to Watch, Present Simple) Television is watched by children and adults. (v. to Be, Present Simple + v. to Watch, Past Participle) The police arrested the thieves. (v. to Arrest, Past Simple) The thieves were arrested by the police. (v. to Be, Past Simple + v. to Watch, Past Participle)

PASSIVE VOICE Em suma…
