52
POSSESSIVO 1. Ortografia substantivo singular + ‘s: my father’s car
substantivo plural + ‘: my parents’ house plural irregular + ‘s: the children’s room
53
2. ‘s e of Normalmente, usamos a estrutura possessiva (A’s B) quando o primeiro substantivo (A) é o nome de alguma coisa “viva”. Em outros casos a forma a ser usada é com of (the B of A). Ex: my friend’s house (e não “the house of my friend”)
54
3. Expressões de tempo Usa-se o possessivo para referir-se a dias, semanas etc, particulares: this evening’s show last Saturday’s party Mas não se usa o possessivo para referir-se a expressões de tempo com significado “geral”: the ten o’clock news (e não the ten o’clock’s news) a Friday night (e não a Friday’s night)
55
4. substantivo + substantivo
Podemos, porém, usar outro tipo de estrutura = substantivo + substantivo: table leg, Sunday newspaper etc.
56
Possessive (mine, yours etc.)
Mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs são pronomes. Seu uso: The pencil is mine. Which car is yours? Nunca usamos artigos após essas formas: Can I borrow your pen? I can’t find mine. (e não ...the mine)
57
Possessive (Whose...?) É possível o uso de whose como um determinante ou pronome: Whose pen is this? Whose is this pen?
58
Possessive adjectives
Os “possessive adjectives” são my, your, his, her, its, one’s, our e their. Seu uso é bastante simples: That’s my car. Is that your mother. Where are our uniforms?
59
Possessive with determiners
Nunca podemos colocar um possessivo junto a outro determinante antes de um substantivo. Por exemplo, é errado dizermos ‘a my friend’ ‘that John’s friend’ etc. Nesses casos, a forma correta seria: a friend of mine, that friend of John’s, that coat of yours, an umbrella of hers, the idea of the boss’s etc.
