RELATIVE CLAUSE / RELATIVE PRONOUNS Os pronomes relativos se referem a um termo anterior chamado antecedente, como substantivo (pessoa, animal ou coisa) ou pronome anteriormente citado. Os pronomes relativos são fundamentais para a boa articulação de frases e textos. Os Pronomes Relativos que estudaremos a seguir são: Who, Whom, Which, That, Whose, Where, When and Why.
Who: (que) – tem como antecedente pessoa Who: (que) – tem como antecedente pessoa. Eg: That lady who made the cake is my aunt. The driver who they followed is my neighbor.
Whom: (que, quem) – tem como antecedente pessoa Whom: (que, quem) – tem como antecedente pessoa. Sempre exerce a função de objeto da oração. O termo da segunda oração inicia com um pronome, nunca com verbo. O pronome Whom pode ser usado com preposições (AT, FOR, WITH, ABOUT...). Quando a frase pede o Pronome Whom, não vem com preposições podemos substituí-lo por WHO ou THAT.
Examples Eg: The Nurse Whom we met is my aunt. Who That Did she see the actor Whom she kissed last Sunday?
Eg: That horse which came from Italy is mine. Which: É usado quando o já mencionado (o antecedente) for animal ou coisa. Eg: That horse which came from Italy is mine. The magazine which I bought is for my wife
Whose: É usado para indicar posse. Indica (cujo,a) Eg: The man whose wife got sick last week is my uncle. The car whose tires are flat is Helen’s.
Eg: Mr.Jones, who plays chess very well, is my grandfather O pronome relativo THAT pode substituir WHO, WHOM e WHICH, exceto quando vier precedido por vírgula ou preposição. Eg: Mr.Jones, who plays chess very well, is my grandfather The girls with whom you study are from Porto Alegre.
Don’t forget Após superlativos só usamos THAT. EG: This is the worst film that I’ve ever seen. Após: Everything, All, Anything, The only, Much and little só usamos THAT. EG: Everything that she says is true. All that glitters is not gold.
Non-Defining Relative Clause Uma “Non-defining relative clause” nos dá uma informação extra sobre uma pessoa ou coisa. Ela não é essencial para o entendimento da oração. Uma “Non-defining relative clause” sempre vem entre vírgulas e não admite THAT ou a omissão do relative pronouns
Eg: The new stadium,which holds 90,000 people,will be opened next week John, who is he maneger of the company, works a lot. Tom’s father, who is 72, goes swimming every day.
Where: Usado quando o antecedente for lugar. Eg: C. Grande is the place where I was born. When: Usado quando o antecedente for referente a tempo. Eg: September is the month when Liza gave me the best gift of our lives.
Why: Usado para justificar razão ou motivo. Eg: The reason why I’m phoning is to invite you to my birthday party.
