Summary Background Innovations in Brazilian Censuses Plans for 2010 Census The Population Count 2007 The use of PDA´s Some results
3
Background Population Censuses in Brazil: – 1872, 1890, 1910, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1991, 2000 Population Counts – 1996, 2007 Why? – Population Estimates – Federal Government transfers to the Municipalities

5
Innovations in Brazilian Censuses 2007 – National Address File for Statistical Purposes – CNEFE (Actualization during the field work in urban areas) – Use of PDA´s for interviews – GPS for address location integrated with Google Earth to display and analysis
6
Plans for 2010 Census – National Address File for Statistical Purposes – CNEFE integrated with cartographic information – GPS for address location integrated with Satellite Images – Use of PDA´s for interviews – Possibility of using alternative Sample Designs due to the use of hand held computers and the CNEFE

2007 Censuses The operations were performed simultaneously - In 2007 we carried on the Agricultural Census and the Population Count of the population living in Municipalities under 170.000 inhabitants. At the same time, we actualised the Master Address file for the urban areas of those municipalities.

Regional Infrastructure: 27 Regional Offices from IBGE More than 500 local agencies from IBGE Census Tracts: Near 170,000 census areas Number of enumerators and supervisors trained: proximately 90,000 PDA´s with GPS: near 82,000 Units of regional collection: More than 5 000, 1,200 fully equipped Some Numbers
10
Operational Integration of the Censuses and other field operations allows better monitoring and scale economies Part of the editing process is performed during operation, allowing to improve the quality of field work during data collection The regional Units receive the maps with the visualization of the locals covered and remaining, thus facilitating the supervision work The PDA´s

Integration : Use of GIS Global Positioning System GPS Satellite Images help to control field work and avoid invasion of census sectors Geo-Referenced Census Frame The PDA´s
