6 Ao sermos apresentados ao “mesmo” fragmento, agora rotulado de poema, o que antes era prosaico passa a ser poético. Como leitores do poema, membros de uma comunidade cultural para a qual o texto se enquadra dentro das convenções literárias estabelecidas, aceitamos o desafio implícito de interpretá-lo poeticamente e passamos a procurar um sentido coerente para ele. Passamos a pensar, por exemplo, nas possíveis implicações da oposição entre o acto de comer as ameixas e as relações sociais que esse ato viola. 7 ao mesmo tempo em que o poema, pela sua própria razão de ser, reconhece a prioridade das regras, através do pedido de perdão, afirma também que a experiência sensual imediata é importante (principalmente pelas suas últimas palavras “so sweet and so cold”) e que as relações pessoais (a relação entre o I e o you) devem antecipar um espaço para tal experiência. Enquanto que a tradução do texto/bilhete não nos trouxe maiores dificuldades, a tradução do texto/poema nos obrigaria a tomar várias decisões nada fáceis. 10 A text, whatever it is, always operates within a context. It can the everyday environment, in the case of a conversation; or a moment of intimacy, in the case of a close relationship; or the school, in the case of a lesson, or holiday time, in the case of leisure reading. Sometimes the context is crucial (as in the case of a lesson), sometimes it is less relevant (e.g., in the reading of a book); and still the production, the exchange, and the reception of a text always takes place in a well-determined situation whch on the one hand is constructed and modelled on the basis of communication, and on the other directs the communication itself and helps to define the sense and the function of what is communicated. In other words, not only is there a context which systematically ‘accompanies’ the text, but the former strongly contributes to the definition of the nature and the profile of the latter. 19 Although the direction of translation has been traditionally assumed to be into the translator’s mother tongue, it is by now widely recognized that translations from languages of limited diffusion into major languages, such as English, often have to be carried out by non-native English translators. Moreover, “English has long since left the ownership of the native speakers in England, and has become, as Henry Widdowson has described it, ‘world property’” (Snell-Hornby, 2000).  FLUP - Elena Zagar Galvão

20 Many authors (among whom Cay Dollerup and Mary Snell-Hornby) have repeatedly pointed out that English has become the international lingua franca; that translations into English are very frequently meant to reach audiences made up mostly of non- native speakers of this language; and that, as a consequence, it is rather unrealistic, if not even arrogant (Stewart, 2000), to insist on the somewhat old-fashioned notion that translators should translate only and exclusively into their mother tongue (a concept which is undergoing drastic changes in our increasingly globalised world).  FLUP - Elena Zagar Galvão

21 In Portugal, for instance (and although Portuguese is among the top ten languages in the world in terms of number of speakers) many years of experience with translation trainees have demonstrated very clearly that a large number of employers tend to assume that translation students must be able to translate from and into the foreign language. For this reason, the texts chosen for this class (for individual and group projects as well as for homework) will be selected from areas which a translator may realistically be confronted with on the Portuguese market – the Internet, business, tourism, international conferences, exhibitions, etc. The following is a list of potential text-types: websites, abstracts; brochures and catalogues (tourist, commercial, institutional); academic papers; research projects; conference programmes, etc.  FLUP - Elena Zagar Galvão
