2 Introdução As noted in the Definition section, the future for mobile learning is undoubtedly bright, However, it’s still an unfamiliar concept to many. Let’s take a few steps back in history and explore the origins of mLearning.

3 O que é o mLearning? O Mobile Learning ou m-Learning é uma extensão do e-Learning, em que a aprendizagem se faz através de dispositivos móveis (telemóvel, PDA, Pocket PC, Tablet PC, Ultra Portáteis,…). O m-Learning apresenta a capacidade de aprender quando e onde se quer através de um qualquer dispositivo móvel. mLearning is shorthand for Mobile Learning. So what is mobile learning, then? It’s important to make this distinction: mLearning does not provide a way to learn – but the capability to learn anywhere. Learning anywhere entails the use of a mobile device which captures the learning for the user and allows him or her to store the file for on-demand use. This is different than downloading to a desktop computer because the download occurs to a device that is portable and allows the user access to information anytime and anywhere.

(Mark Prensky, 2001) To better understand the capabilities of mobile Learning, let’s take a look at some examples that demonstrate the use of mobile learning by individuals and corporations. Imagine a pharmaceutical salesman for Company X is making sales calls to clients. Simultaneously, a competitor announces FDA approval for their new Drug Z. Minutes after the announcement, Company X sends out a quick tutorial to all sales personnel via their cell phones or other mobile devices that teaches them instantly how to sell against Drug Z.

As we progress through the first decade of the 21st century, the number of available mLearning technologies has also grown. We’ll briefly explore a few of these technologies and their potential instructional uses. First, there are iPods and MP3 Players. Using these devices, students can download podcasts of relevant instructional material, listen to or watch audio and video lectures and record lectures for future review.
