We already consume more than the Earth can regenerate: 1.5 times the capacity of our planet. Sustainability is therefore a crucial issue for our future. Awareness for sustainability is also increasing among our stakeholders: Customers want sustainable products, industry wants sustainable solutions. Employees want to work for a company that takes sustainability seriously. Desenvolvimento sustentável é equilibrar aspectos econômicos, sociais e ambientais – hoje e amanhã. É uma jornada que requer diálogo e parceria com clientes e demais stakeholders. Equilibrar é pesar as opções e buscar as melhores soluções disponíveis. Contribuir para satisfazer as necessidades da sociedade de forma mais sustentável é o motor para o nosso negócio. The Brundtland-Report of the United Nations defined a development as sustainable, when it “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This means for business: combining economic success with social responsibility and environmental protection – in other words: balancing profit with the needs of the planet and people. The term sustainable development makes it clear that the concept of sustainability is dynamic. We are on a journey – today and tomorrow – to meet the vision of a sustainable future. A pre-condition for this purpose is the close cooperation with our stakeholders: customers, regulators, scientists, investors, civil society, employees etc.. Balancing the needs of a business corporation, the environment and societies is a complex task. As business representatives we need to weigh options to decide about the best available solutions: for us, our planet and our stakeholders. As the chemical industry we are producing all kinds of materials providing them to all industries. Therefore: Our industry is in an excellent position to make a change towards are sustainable future. 9

On this basis we have defined seven customer industries in which we want to contribute to solutions and thus continue to grow profitably: transport, construction, consumer goods, health and nutrition, electronics, agriculture, energy & resources. In turn, these customer industries result in new growth fields for BASF in which we can make a decisive contribution to innovative, sustainable solutions for the global challenges I just spoke about. Examples of growth fields in which we already offer solutions are batteries, plant biotechnology and water treatment. Further growth fields are currently being developed or are under analysis. On behalf of the Board of Executive Directors, experts for safety, environment and occupational medicine monitor all our sites and plants. Using clearly defined criteria, they track how our standards are implemented locally. Social Performance Assessment: As a company operating on a global scale, we are committed to maintain and respect the internationally recognized labor and social standards as well as applicable law. We contribute our expertise to a World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) project, in which we work together with other companies to establish a uniform interpretation of this standard for the chemical industry.
