A obesidade é, habitualmente, medida pelo índice de massa corporal (IMC) IMC = Peso (kg) Altura (m2) World Health Organization, 1998 Classificação IMC (kg/m2) Risco de comorbilidades Valor normal 18.524.9 Baixo Exceso de peso 25 Pré-obesidade 2529.9 Aumentado Obes. classe I 30.034.9 Moderado Obes. classe II 35.039.9 Grave Obes. classe III 40.0 Muito grave Slide 3: Obesity is usually measured as body mass index (BMI) The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index (BMI). BMI is the ratio of body weight (kg) divided by height (m2). Both weight and height can be measured very simply in the clinic and the BMI determined by calculation of the formula. Using BMI, it is possible to determine obesity by reference to internationally accepted “Grades”, commencing with “normal” (Grade 0) for individuals with a BMI <25 kg/m2 and rising to “severely obese” at Grade 3 (BMI >40 kg/m2). O perímetro da cintura é um marcador alternativo da gordura visceral Mulher >88 cm = Risco aumentado1 Homem >102 cm = Risco aumentado1 1Lean MEJ, et al. Lancet;1998:351:853–6 cm Slide 5: Waistline circumference is a surrogate marker of visceral fat Waistline circumference, perhaps the simplest of all measurements, provides an accurate assessment of visceral fat mass which has been shown to be a key indicator of risk factors for major cardiovascular disease. A waistline circumference >88 cm in women and >102 cm in men reflects a significantly increased risk of developing many of the co-morbidities associated with obesity. Outros parâmetros de medição da obesidade Espessura da prega cutânea Impedância bioeléctrica Distribuição da gordura por TAC or RMN Exemplo de TAC Slide 6: Other measures of obesity Skinfold thickness, the determination of fat mass by bio-electric impedance and the use of computerised tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MRI) scanning may also be used to evaluate obesity. The last two techniques are, however, limited to use in specialist centres and are particularly expensive. Xenical Slide Kit August 1998 Section 1 6 6
