Chemical refining is characterized by the use of caustic soda in alkali neutralization to begin removing impurities from the oil. The gums and free fatty acids (FFA) are removed and leave the oil in the soapstock. The soapstock by-product must then acidulated to reclaim the FFA and reduce the plants waste discharge. Physical refining is characterized by a deep wet degumming step for seed oils or a dry degumming step for Palm, lauric and some animal oils. The fatty acids are then removed in the deodorization step. The oils usually are of a high (<2%) free fatty acid content. Physical refining of high FFA oils reduces the total oil loss in the refinery and eliminates pollution associated with soapstock disposal or processing from neutralization. © Alfa Laval © Alfa Laval

2 Objetivos da Degomagem
Produção de Lecitina Comercial Prevenção de sedimentação de óleo bruto durante estocagem e transporte Refino Físico There are many economic reasons for degumming. The most important reason to water degum vegetable oil is for the production of lecithin. Unfortunately the potential supply from soy bean lecithin, 374,000 metric tons, far outstrips the market, 100,000 metric tons. If you are transporting oil overseas it must first be water degummed to prevent sludge formation in the holds of sea going vessels or ships or storage containers. Soapstock, from crude oil refining, which contains a high amount of gums is difficult to acidulate and the acid water has a very high BOD. Because of these pollution problems some processors water degum their crude oils and return the gums to the meal going to animal feed. Some processors choose to eliminate caustic refining and use physical refining. Physical refining requires that the vegetable oil be super degummed, before it is bleached, and then physical refined. 3 Gomas Dois tipos principais: Fosfatídeos Hidratáveis – fácil remoção
Fosfatídeos Não-Hidratáveis (NHP) – difícil remoção Parte dos NHP são removidos com hidratáveis na degomagem com água Requer o uso de um ácido para convertê-los a hidratáveis para completa remoção Hydratable phosphatides are those gums which will precipitate from the crude oil when water is added. There are some phosphorous containing compounds that remain in the oil after water hydration. These materials are referred to as Non Hydratable Phosphatides and are removed in the caustic refining step with phosphoric acid pretreatment. The Non Hydratable Phosphatides can also be removed by degumming with some additions to the water degumming process. We will explore acid degumming and super degumming at the end of this paper. © Alfa Laval © Alfa Laval

The hydration temperature is important and should be controlled at 150 F by the oil heater upstream of the hydration tank. As the hydration temperature is increased from 150 F some the hydratable phosphatide will dissolve back into the oil. Water addition is critical to the degumming process and influences both the quality of the degummed oil and the oil content of the gums phase. An excess amount of water will cause a free water phase to form in addition to a fluid yellow-brown gum phase and a hazy degummed oil phase when tested with a Alfa Laval Gyro Tester. If too little water is used, the gums phase will be dark and viscous. The best approach is to start with a water treat that is about 55 to 75 weight per cent of the gums content in the vegetable oil. For a soya bean oil with a 2.2 weight per cent gums a good starting water treat would be 1.2 to 1.4 weight per cent. Once the process is started the water treat should be optimized. The water and oil mixture is allowed to react in a slowly agitated tank for about 30 to 45 minutes. In this tank the hydratable gums agglomerate in the heavy water and form a floc that is easily separated. A sample from the hydration tank should be taken to ensure that a good gum floc has formed. © Alfa Laval © Alfa Laval
