Além da Algebra Hi, my name is Billie Lane, and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tell you about a lesson plan that I developed for my junior high school algebra students at Kalles Junior High in Puyallup, Washington. Kalles has 900 students in grades 7 through 9. I teach Intro. to Math, Intermediate Math, and Algebra. At Kalles our motto is “Teamwork—Together We Triumph.” This lesson plan is an example of outstanding teamwork among the students in my Algebra 1/2 class. Billie Lane Eileen B. Therefore, in this lesson plan, students work in groups of two or three to prepare and teach an algebra topic through a multimedia presentation. In addition, students create an informational brochure on their lesson that includes an announcement of or invitation to their presentation. Finally, students post their lesson to a class Web page, which serves an an excellent algebra resource for all students.

In addition, there are Multimedia Objectives, Publishing Objectives, and Web Page Objectives. For the Multimedia Objectives, students prepare and present their algebra topic to the class through a multimedia PowerPoint presentation. For the Publishing Objectives, students create an informational brochure using Microsoft Publisher. This brochure must include an overview of Algebra 1/2, a summary of the student presentation, and an announcement of or invitation to the student’s multimedia presentation to the class. Finally, for the Web Page Objectives, students must contribute their lesson to the class Web page by creating a sub-page linked to the class home page. Their page must include historical and/or background information, a lesson on the selected topic, applications, and sample problems. The class Web page can be updated yearly to create an algebra resource for students.

Before beginning this project, students should have five prerequisite skills. They should have a working knowledge of basic research skills, as well as a working knowledge of some basic software, including word processing, Microsoft Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Finally, they should be able to work well in cooperative groups.

In addition, we use Internet Explorer for our Internet Web browser and Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Deluxe 2000.

Begin the lesson plan by helping students form cooperative groups of two to three students each. Then have each group select a math topic that has been covered over the course of the year in algebra. Next, have students research their topic for historical or background information. The goal is for each group to create a lesson plan about their topic that includes background information, an explanation of the algebra topic, applications, and sample problems with solutions.

For the gifted student, provide topics beyond the scope of the material covered in Algebra 1/2. Topics may include extensions of a topic taught or another topic of interest to the student (such as Pascal’s Triangle, infinity, number theory, prime numbers, fractals, etc.).
